Introduction

Magnesium is a silvery-white metal which is used as an alloy element for zinc, lead, aluminum, and other nonferrous alloys. Magnesium alloys have high strength and excellent vibration damping characteristics. Magnesium AZ92A-T5 alloy is ductile, and has moderate strength.

Fabrication and Heat Treatment

Magnesium AZ92A-T5 alloy is can be welded using gas-shielded and arc-welding techniques. Stress relief is required after welding the alloy. The material is then aged at 260°C (500°F) for 4 h under the as-fabricated F condition.

Applications

Magnesium AZ92A-T5 alloy is typically used for commercial and military pressure-tight sand and permanent-mold castings that have high yield and tensile strengths.
