Introduction

Ulbraseal 52 is one of the glass to metal sealing alloys with a constant coefficient of thermal expansion of up to 565°C (1050°F). This alloy is generally used in the annealed condition as residual cold working tends to distort the coefficient of thermal expansion.

The following datasheet will provide an overview of Ulbraseal 52 alloy.

Fabrication and Heat Treatment

Machinability

Conventional machining techniques that are used for machining austenitic steels can be used. However, the alloy has to be kept away from sulfur containing oils as they may contaminate the alloy.

Forming

Ulbraseal 52 alloy is characterized by good ductility, and hence it can be formed by conventional means.

Welding

The alloy can be welded using conventional methods.

Heat Treatment

The alloy can be annealed at 816°C (1500°F) and then air cooled.

Forging

Forging can be performed at a temperature of 1177°C (2150°F).

Cold Working

Ulbraseal 52 alloy can be readily cold worked.

Other Designations

Other designations that are equivalent to Ulbraseal 52 alloy include the following:

  • MIL I-23011 Class 2
  • ASTM F30-68

Applications

The following are the list of applications of Ulbraseal 52 alloy:

  • Cores in mechanical rectifiers
  • Magnetic amplifiers requiring rectangular hysteresis
  • Glass to metal sealing applications.
