Background

John Jansen is a senior researcher in Polymer Science at the Institute on Membrane Technology of the Italian National Research Council in Rende (Italy). He previously worked as a visiting researcher at the CNR Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry in Milan (Italy); as a research scientist at the Agrotechnological Research Institute, Ato-dlo, in Wageningen (The Netherlands) and as a visiting researcher at DSM Resins, Zwolle (The Netherlands). He has a PhD on the synthesis and characterization of side-chain liquid crystalline polycarbonates at the Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands).

In his current position he is coordinator of the EU’s 7th Framework project DoubleNanoMem (www.itm.cnr.it/doublenanomem) on polymeric and mixed matrix membranes and he is responsible for various other national or international research projects with public or private bodies. His major fields of interest are:

  • Preparation and characterization of polymeric membranes by phase inversion. This concerns mainly the study of the phase inversion process (polymer solution rheology, behaviour of ternary polymer/solvent/nonsolvent mixtures, membrane formation by dry- or dry-wet phase inversion) and thermal, mechanical and morphological characterization.
  • Investigation of the transport properties of polymeric membranes, with emphasis of dense membranes for gas and vapour separation. This involves gas and vapour permeation measurements, pure and mixed gas permeation, sorption analysis, and for porous membranes also pore size analysis, permeability measurements and solute rejection tests.
  • Novel material development and characterization: Mixed Matrix Membranes, Ionic Liquids-based polymer gel membranes, and their physical and structural characterization: thermal and mechanical properties, free volume distribution, X-ray analysis.
  • He is author of over 50 publications in peer reviewed journals and book chapters, and holder of two patents.
