PNNL's New Rechargeable Battery Offers Inexpensive, Eco-Friendly Alternative for Storing Renewable Energy

A research team has unexpectedly discovered a rechargeable battery, which is as cheap as the standard car batteries, but with very high energy density. This new battery could be used as an alternative to support the power grid and store renewable energy in an environmentally friendly and cost-effective manner.

Connah’s Quay Power Station Minimizes Operational Requirements with HACH’s LDO Monitoring Technology

Staff at Connah’s Quay Power Station have installed the latest luminescent optical dissolved oxygen (LDO) monitoring technology to minimise operational requirements whilst protecting the plant’s high value assets. An Orbisphere K1100 sensor from HACH now monitors DO continuously in the boiler water feed, requiring almost no maintenance or calibration.

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory have demonstrated that the design and placement of a tiny measurement device called a reference electrode enhances the quantity and quality of information that can be extracted from lithium-ion battery cells during cycling.

Researchers Demonstrate Fabrication of Electrochemically Active Organic Lithium Electrode Thin Films

With people wanting to use smaller electronic devices, smaller energy storage systems are needed. Researchers of Aalto University in Finland have demonstrated the fabrication of electrochemically active organic lithium electrode thin films, which help make microbatteries more efficient than before. Researchers used a combined atomic/molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD) technique, to prepare lithium terephthalate, a recently found anode material for a lithium-ion battery.

Research on New Cladding and Fuel Materials for Safer Nuclear Reactors

Around the world nuclear energy is a vital source of energy. It is needed because it is a clean energy source and reduces the carbon emissions from fossil fuels. However many people believe that the risk of nuclear accidents does not outweigh the advantages of using nuclear energy. Michael Tonks, assistant professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering at Penn State and director of the Microstructure Science and Engineering Laboratory at Penn State is involved with three projects through the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP). These projects aim to discover new materials for nuclear fuel, to make the existing light water reactors (LWRs) safer.
