Thin Concrete Joint Building System Improves Energy Efficiency

The H+H Thin Joint system creates a high insulation specification of aircrete walling as a Modern Method of Construction for the stylish five-storey Viewpoint apartment block, built by Bugler Developments for Asra Housing Association in London.

The H+H system meant that a high level of airtightness could be achieved for the energy performance of the external walls and to acoustically-insulate the interior partition walling.

This was a winner with the contractors for being much quicker and less messy to use on site than traditional mortar, because the H+H system’s Celfix bonding requires no cement mixers, silos or sand. Also, each aircrete block weighs less than 20g, meaning they can be safely manhandled without lifting plant according to HSE guidelines.

Alan Ferguson of specialist contractor Ferguson Construction commented, “I liked working with it. It is quicker, cleaner and produces less waste than other methods. Once people are trained to use the system it runs very well and we finished on time. I would happily recommend the Thin-Joint system to others.”

The system ticks all the right boxes for sustainability with specifiers because

H+H aircrete is manufactured from nearly 80% pulverised fuel-ash waste recycled from coal-fired power stations that would otherwise be heading for landfill.

This is the second site where Bugler Developments have made use of the system, having initially applied it to a site in East London.

Built on the site of a former pub, the development brings 37 apartments for outright sale, shared ownership and affordable rent to West London.
