Betts appoints Nypro Inc. as its Strategic Manufacturing and Development Partner for Specialty Plastics Globally

Betts UK, part of the global Betts Group of specialist packaging companies, has announced the appointment of Nypro Inc. as its Strategic Manufacturing and Development Partner for its specialty plastics business globally. With headquarters in Clinton, Massachusetts, Nypro Inc. is one of the world’s largest dedicated precision plastics solutions businesses for the pharmaceutical, personal care, household and consumer goods markets.

Under the terms of the appointment, Betts and Nypro will continue the development of Betts’ specialty injection moulding business from its manufacturing site in Colchester until the beginning of September 2005, by which time it is anticipated that the business will have been relocated in a phased manner to Nypro owned manufacturing facilities. Betts will effectively exit from the manufacture of specialty plastics injection mouldings and will concentrate solely on its core laminate tubes business and on the injection moulding of related tube components.

The closure of the Colchester manufacturing capacity will affect approximately 200 people between March and September 2005. Every effort will be made to find alternative employment within Betts, Nypro and outside Betts for as many employees as possible.

“We are delighted to have agreed the partnership with Nypro given its market standing and commitment to specialty plastics. Nypro is uniquely placed to develop the business to a level which Betts would not have been able to support with appropriate investment in the context of the opportunities which Betts has to invest in its core laminate tubes business” says Rosemary Mason, Managing Director of Betts UK.

“Betts has a number of significant opportunities to grow its laminate tubes business in both Europe and globally building on our own strategic customer partnerships. This move will allow Betts to concentrate on its core business activities and to grow its laminate tube business in new market sectors in Europe, in particular personal care.”

According to Brian S. Jones, President and CEO of Nypro, "This opportunity will further Nypro's goal to be the leading precision plastics manufacturer in Europe, and in the rest of the world. Nypro has been building its business in Europe since 1980 internally and through joint ventures and partnerships. We are proud to continue the Betts reputation for excellence in the market. The opportunity to work alongside Betts for the next year will allow a seamless transition for current Betts customers. We are excited by the prospect of increasing our ability to service more major multinational customers in Europe from facilities in Ireland, Wales, France, Hungary, Denmark, Finland and Russia and provide access for them to our global manufacturing network.”
