Antimicrobial Coating for Shared Computers

Biosafe Inc., has developed an antimicrobial surface treatment for the keyboards of Classmate netbook PCs used in an ambitious worldwide education program spearheaded by Intel Corp.

BIOSAFE is an antimicrobial based on patented silane technology that provides durable protection against damaging microorganisms. Working with computer manufacturer ECS/Uniwill China, Biosafe Inc. formulated a special coating that enabled its BIOSAFE additive to be incorporated into the surface of the polycarbonate/ABS plastics keyboard. When the coated surface was subjected to abrasion tests, it exhibited no falloff in antimicrobial activity, according to Donald J. Wagner II, Biosafe Inc. vice president for business development.

Designed for students from kindergarten through junior high school, Intel-powered Classmate PCs are key components in a multinational educational program called the Intel Learning Series that also includes software, training, and localized support, all provided by participants in the Intel Learning Series Alliance. According to Intel, the "kid-friendly" computers outperform standard drop tests on hard surfaces; have rotating webcams, convertible touch screens, and built-in cases and handles for portability; come with educational software; and are supported "300-plus partners, organizations, and education leaders worldwide." The keyboard protected by the BIOSAFE coating is designed to be spill-resistant.

"The high-touch surfaces of electronic devices are particularly susceptible to harboring microorganisms, which can cause odors and stains and are readily transmitted to successive users of the devices," said Wagner. "By protecting the keyboard of the Classmate PC against microorganisms, the BIOSAFE coating enhances the user experience of students, teachers, and parents. They are reminded of this protection by the BIOSAFE trademark sticker on the palm rest of the netbook."
