Quick-Med Awarded Additional Australian Patent

Quick-Med Technologies, a developer of innovative technologies for the consumer and healthcare markets, has expanded its global patent portfolio for the NIMBUS technology. It has received another patent from the Australian Government’s Patent Office.

The company has been awarded the Australian Patent No. 2006283043 for a technology covering the process for bonding the active agent, NIMBUS non-leachably to wound dressings and other substrates. The patent is titled, "Antimicrobial Cationic Polyelectrolyte Coating".

Quick-Med's NIMBUS technology is a custom designed, advanced antimicrobial technology for medical applications including wound care. It provides an effective and safe structure for applications in the medical field. The technology enables a non-leaching antimicrobial dressing to prevent bacteria from developing resistance. The non-leachable configuration enables the product to retain its original performance by preventing reduction of the active polymer. Bacterial resistance is initiated by certain antimicrobials when they are allowed to migrate. This may lead to depletion of the polymer to a low level that is incapable of inactivating or destroying the bacteria.

Dressings containing silver interfere with wound healing, but bound actives do not interfere with the healing. The dressing has an absorbent part that prohibits development of bacteria that can re-enter the wound and lead to renewal of the infection. The increase in bacterial population may also cause odor, which is also prevented.
