Roofing Materials from Owens Corning Used to Re-Roof Advanced Light Source

Re-roofing of the Advanced Light Source (ALS), a particle accelerator situated at the U.S. Department of Energy's Berkeley Lab, has been carried out using Owens Corning’s Deck Defense roof Underlayment and Duration Premium COOL Roof Shingles.

The decision to re-roof the ALS resulted from the shingles damaging the dome. Berkeley Lab took assistance from the Rated Products Directory of the Cool Roof Rating Council to select shingles that will provide excellent performance and high solar reflectance. Duration Premium COOL shingles from Owens Corning has been chosen for its capacity to minimize the urban heat effect. In addition, Deck Defense high performance underlayment decreases water intrusion, thus delivering long-term protection for the ALS’ roof. State Roofing Systems has been responsible for replacing the roof of the ALS.

Duration Premium shingles meets the solar reflectance of 0.25 and California Title 24 cool roof standard. Cool roofs use extremely reflective granule technology that emits back sunlight and helps to maintain the roofs cooler. This leads to a reduction in the suburban and urban heat island effect and carbon dioxide emissions. Owens Corning’s shingles features SureNail Technology, which ensures 130mph wind protection. As a global producer of commercial and residential building materials, engineered materials for composite systems and glass-fiber reinforcements, Owens Corning is delighted to see its solutions being used to protect an iconic structure.
