The coolest way to capture yourself or your loved one in 3D has just arrived at the MakerBot retail stores in New York, Boston and Greenwich, Conn. The new MakerBot 3D Photo Booth takes 3D portraits and instantly creates a unique 3D digital file to share and 3D print. The MakerBot 3D Photo Booth captures the subject’s head and shoulders in a 360-degree image, and within seconds, creates a digital file that can then be 3D printed and made into a unique model and keepsake.
The MakerBot 3D Photo Booth was originally launched in the New York MakerBot Store last fall and has enjoyed tremendous success, becoming very popular, with adults and children alike scanning themselves and creating all sorts of interesting 3D portrait models – from 3D printed busts, to wedding cake toppers, to putting their head on the top of Greek statues, gargoyles and other fun items – even making pencil toppers and pieces of jewelry out of them. Due to the popularity of the MakerBot 3D Photo Booth, MakerBot decided this fall to revamp the 3D Photo Booth and make it even better and expand its offerings to MakerBot’s two new retail stores in Boston and Greenwich, Conn., in addition to the flagship New York retail store. The new MakerBot 3D Photo Booth captures a full view of the head and shoulders, creating a full perspective of the subject’s head, hair and facial expression. Ponytails and braids show up on the back of the head, and so do beards, mustaches and eyebrows on the front. The depth of detail on the new MakerBot 3D Photo Booth has been created to capture the likeness of the person sitting in the booth during that moment.

Taking a MakerBot 3D Portrait is easy. Just sit in the chair in the booth, look at the computer screen, and smile (or make a funny or serious face). The cameras and lasers loop around in a full circle, capturing the head and shoulders in a few seconds, and show you instantly on the screen what your scan looks like. Guests then upload the digital file directly to Thingiverse.com where they can access it later for their own 3D printing use, or order a 3D printed bust or statue directly from MakerBot to pick up in the store at a later date (or have it shipped directly to them). The 3D Photo Booth costs $5 for the scan and then is $20, $40 or $60 for a small, medium or large 3D portrait printed by MakerBot.
In addition to the MakerBot 3D Photo Booth, visitors to the MakerBot retail stores will have the opportunity to experience MakerBot technology, such as the MakerBot® Replicator® 2 Desktop 3D Printer and the MakerBot® Digitizer™ Desktop 3D Scanner, live and in-person. Patrons also have the chance to purchase MakerBot PLA and ABS Filament, available in more than 30 colors, and 3D printed gifts and accessories made on MakerBot Desktop 3D Printers, created at the company’s workshop.
Other attractions at the store that are sure to delight 3D printing enthusiasts, from hobbyists to professional engineers and designers, include:
