Rohm and Haas Introduces Innovative Adhesives for Electrostatic Spray Systems

Attendees to the Rubber Expo™ '05, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will find an exciting new product taking center stage in area of high-performance rubber-to-metal bonding applications.

Rohm and Haas will introduce their highly efficient coating procedure for high-volume electrostatic spray application of adhesives. Formulated especially for all-metal anti-vibration parts such as engine mounts, hydromounts, and bushings, and marketed under their Megum™ brand, the new adhesives bring a tremendous improvement in adhesive transfer.

Rohm and Haas global business manager for transportation, John Channon, cites, “Compared to traditional spray guns that deliver 25-30 percent transfer rates, electrostatic spray systems dramatically boost adhesive transfer rates to 80 to 90 percent, allowing manufacturers to direct the adhesive more efficiently and use much less of it. Adhesive costs can fall considerably as users require lower amounts, some as low as one-third of the amount they needed previously.”

Perfecting a proven technology for adhesives application Rohm and Haas have helped to perfect the electrostatic spray systems technology, which is already proven and widely used for powder coating and painting, for adhesives application.

“Controlled transfer yields predictable coating thickness with very tight tolerances, even on complex parts,” says Channon. “This in turn leads to fewer rejected parts.”

The systems can offer significant advantages in overall cost savings, coating quality, and environmental stewardship for large-volume rubber-to-metal bonding applications.

Rohm and Haas will also introduce during Rubber expo 05 several new products for rubber-to-metal bonding, flocking and weatherstrip applications from their popular, high- performance adhesive lines, Robond™ TR adhesives, Megum™ and Thixon™ rubber-to-metal bonding agents and Mor-Flock™ flocking agents.
