Mica, a Naturally Occurring High Performance Insulator, Available from Goodfellow in Sheet Form

Muscovite mica (potassium aluminosilicate), available from Goodfellow in sheet form, is a naturally occurring mineral that can be split into thin uniform layers.

Mica in its natural form. The perfect basal cleavage of a mica crystal allows very thin sheets of mica to be hand-cleaved and used in a number of specialised applications.

It is transparent, resistant to high temperatures, dielectric, chemically inert to most substances, and is a good electrical insulator as well as a good thermal conductor.

As such, it finds application in:

  • Electrical components
  • Electronics
  • Atomic force microscopy
  • Missile systems
  • Radar systems
  • Laser devices

Goodfellow supplies clear ruby mica as sheets ranging in thickness from 0.012 mm to 0.15 mm, and clear green mica in sheets that are 0.15 mm thick. Other thicknesses may be available upon request.
