Johnson Matthey Refinery Damaged by Fire

Johnson Matthey’s precious metals refining plant in New Jersey (USA) was damaged by fire over the weekend.

An initial blaze broke out in the refinery production area affecting the roof area. This fire was put out, but another fire started when a section of the roof collapsed and small pockets were opened up. This fire was also brought under control and extinguished.

The cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained.

Environmental concerns were raised as the plant contains many chemicals such as acids and bases, which could have been released into the nearby creek systems. These fears were avoided as most of the fire that raged was restricted to the fibreglass duct system

No staff were injured in the fire, with all of them being evacuated safely. However, a number of fire fighters were treated for smoke inhalation.
