Boeing Donate Microwave Technology to Washington State University

Boeing have donated patents for microwave technology to Washington State University. The technology was originally developed to dry out spacecraft after ocean landing and to cure composite materials.

The technology known as “Microwave Vacuum Dehydration Technology” or MIVAC, was first developed in the 1970’s at McDonnell Douglas, now part of Boeing. It has been used by them for the curing of composites for use in fighter jets.

Washington State University will use the technology for the drying of fruits and vegetables, free of additives. The use of microwaves provides more even heating, resulting in more even drying. Other advantages include lower processing temperatures, with no changes in colour, flavour, appearance or nutritional value.
