Oxford Instruments Launch Hand-Held XRF Analyzer for RoHS Compliance

Oxford Instruments has launched a new fast, lightweight, hand-held XRF analyser. With one pull of the trigger, the X MET3000TXR+ delivers faster than ever color coded pass/fail analysis for RoHS compliance testing as well as a detailed quantitative analysis of the sample composition.

The X MET 3000TXR+ is a hand-held XRF instrument configured for screening of samples for the elements restricted by the current EU RoHS directive – Cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE). With new Chinese environmental regulation taking effect on March 1, 2007 and environmental legislation pending in several U.S. states, the dramatic improvements in the detection limits of hazardous elements by this instrument come at a perfect time.

Inclusion of the new PentaPINTM detector - which is based on the Oxford Instruments’ proven and patented PentaFET® technology - enables faster analysis and lower detection limits for all elements to be analyzed. Low detection limits are an irreplaceable feature due the highly restrictive RoHS regulations with Cadmium in particular. Further, the X MET3000TXR+ provides a timed-assay function for the longer measurement times required in RoHS screening.

With the PentaPINTM detector, a ten second analysis produces the equivalent of a thirty second analysis made using an instrument with a standard Si-PIN detector. When measuring plastic samples, the lower background and increased count rate bring substantial improvements to the detection limits for the RoHS elements. This has resulted in better than a factor of four improvement in the detection limits for lead and chromium and similar improvements for other elements analyzed. New improved software has been implemented to process the data generated by the detector and increases the accuracy of the results obtained.

The user friendly software of the X MET3000TXR+ is configured for inspecting plastics, metals and mixed samples for RoHS compliance. Analysis results are pass/fail color coded for easy interpretation by inspection department staff. The X MET3000TXR+ now supports multiple languages including Chinese, Russian, German, French and others. Contact Oxford Instruments to determine if your language is supported.

Responding to customer concerns for radiation safety, Oxford Instruments is also introducing a new optional bench-top stand with a large enclosed chamber with safety interlock. This allows the X MET3000TXR+ to be used in a closed beam configuration for substantially improved radiation safety during the measurement of typical RoHS samples.
