Cadbury Chocolates to be Packaged in Biodegradable Polymers

Australia’s confectionary manufacturer Cadbury Schweppes will be the first manufacturer in the world to implement a new form of environmentally friendly packaging. They will use the biodegradable polymeric material for packaging Cadbury Milk Tray Chocolates.

The packages used will look like the familiar plastic packaging, but will be made of water soluble cornstarch polymer. The material was developed in Australia by Plantic Technologies.

The new material is stable under humid conditions, but will break down when fully immersed in water. It is aesthetically indistinguishable from the plastic packaging that customers have become used to, and consequently will carry a logo to indicate it is made of a biodegradable material.
