Jake Wilkinson

Jake graduated from the University of Manchester with an integrated masters in Chemistry with honours.

Due to his two left hands the practical side of science never appealed to him, instead he focused his studies on the field of science communication. His degree, combined with his previous experience in the promotion and marketing of events, meant a career in science marketing was a no-brainer.

In his spare time Jake enjoys keeping up with new music, reading anything he can get his hands on and going on the occasional run.

Flexible Water-Based Band-Aid with Embedded Electronics Faciltates Smart Drug Delivery

A futuristic band-aid has been developed that is sticky and stretchable whilst allowing electronics to be integrated into it. The band-aid consists of a hydrogel and can have LEDs and temperature sensors embedded into its structure. Microscale drug reservoirs and delivery channels can also be integrated into the band-aid which will allow the delivery of drugs in response to changes in body temperature or other biological signals such as blood glucose levels.

MIT Researchers Develop Tunable Metallic-Cage Gels

A novel material that displays both the stiff behavior or a solid and the soft, visoelastic behavior of a polymer gel has been developed. The material is a hybrid of a metal organic cage and a metallogel and could be used for specific gas storage, targeted drug delivery and water filtration.

Heart Urchin Study Provides New Insights to Develop Strong, Lightweight Materials

A new model of developing robust and lightweight materials, which involves the inclusion of air pockets to give a stiff foam strucutre, has been discovered. The lead researchers drew inspiration from the tough exoskeleton of sea urchins; which have the same constituents as chalk and contain 70% air, yet are extremely strong.
