The Principles of Metallurgy 0.4 CEU on-demand course teaches the basics of metallurgy. It teaches the basic microscopic structures present inside of metals, how these structures and metal composition influence metal strength, and how these structures can be modified using common manufacturing processes to obtain specific mechanical properties. Students will also learn about tensile testing, hardness testing, and microstructure analysis. The knowledge gained will help students address metallurgy decisions and problems related to product and process development, supplier evaluation and selection, quality improvement, and root cause analysis.

Problems within the course modules provide examples of real metallurgy problems while testing student knowledge.

Course Outline

The Principles of Metallurgy course consists of 11 modules. There are quizzes following most of the modules. The modules are:

  1. Introduction
  2. Composition
  3. Microscopic structures
  4. Crystal defects
  5. Diffusion
  6. Microstructure Evaluation
  7. Tensile Testing
  8. Hardness Testing
  9. Metal Strengthening: Cold Working, Grain Size Reduction, and Solid Solution Hardening
  10. Metal Strengthening: Precipitation Hardening Heat Treatment
  11. Metal Strengthening: Steel Heat Treating

Course Length

The course takes about 4 hours to complete and is divided into 11 modules. Modules are 5 to 25 minutes long. Learners will have 3 months to complete the course. The course will not be accessible to a learner after 3 months.

Target Audience

The Principles of Metallurgy course is targeted towards design, manufacturing, and quality engineers, and sales people and purchasing agents with technical backgrounds.

Course Objective

Upon completion of the Principles of Metallurgy course students will be able to do the following:

  1. Explain the relationship between a metal’s properties and its composition, microscopic structure, and the manufacturing processes used to fabricate the metal.
  2. Describe three types of microscopic structures present in metals.
  3. Explain how cold working, alloying, and heat treating are used to strengthen a metal.
  4. Explain the microstructure and property changes that occur in cold worked metals, steels, and precipitation hardened alloys when they are heat treated.
  5. Relate the heat treatment time and temperature to the microscopic structures and properties of precipitation hardened alloys, steels, and cold worked metals.
  6. Explain the causes of common problems in cold worked, solution hardened, precipitation hardened alloys, and heat treated steels.
  7. Explain how tensile tests are performed and how the test data is analyzed to determine yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation.
  8. Explain the common hardness tests, their differences, and how samples are prepared for testing.
  9. Explain how a metal sample is prepared for microstructure examination.
