Soitec and CEA sign a Five-Year R&D Partnership

Soitec (Euronext Paris), a world leader in generating and manufacturing revolutionary semiconductor materials for the electronics and energy industries, and CEA have renewed their long-standing and fruitful partnership for the next five years. This new contract aims to support Soitec's strategy for the electronics, solar energy and lighting markets. It will focus on engineered substrates and materials offering higher performances and energy savings at a competitive cost.

Jack Hills Zircons Contain Fragments of Diamond-Polishing Compound, Not Diamonds

As is well known, the Earth is about 4.6 billion years old. No rocks exist, however, that are older than about 3.8 billion years. A sedimentary rock section in the Jack Hills of western Australia, more than 3 billion years old, contains within it zircons that were eroded from rocks as old as about 4.3 billion years, making these zircons, called Jack Hills zircons, the oldest recorded geological material on the planet.

EPFL-Led Innovative Materials Project to Receive Swiss National Science Foundation Funding

Today, the Federal Councilor Johann Schneider-Amman has unveiled eight new National Centers of Competence in Research (NCCR), which will receive substantial funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation. The "MARVEL" project, managed by EPFL and dedicated to developing innovative materials using powerful computer simulations, was one of the winning submissions.
