UCSB Develops New Underwater Adhesive Inspired by Sandcastle Worms

A new underwater adhesive substance has been developed by UC Santa Barbara’s interdisciplinary group of researchers. This adhesive can be used for a variety of non-biological and biomedical applications. Areas that could benefit from this glue, include dental adhesion, tissue repair and other surface adhesion applications which are usually done under adverse conditions like in aqueous solutions with organic impurities and salty sea water.

Stanford Engineer Uses Gecko-Inspired Adhesive to Climb Like Spider-Man

In a recent episode of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert commented on a discovery made by zoologists from the University of Cambridge that Spider-Man probably couldn't climb walls. After intensive research, the zoologists found that natural adhesives scale in a way that geckos are the largest animals that can stick to walls and climb vertical surfaces.

According to scientists, humans can walk on walls like Spiderman, but only with the help of adhesive pads covering 40% of the body’s surface. Scientists believe that their discovery provide a feasibility for large-scale, gecko-like adhesives.
