PolyOne Offers Plastics that Satisfy the US Requirements for Toys and Products Marketed for Kids

PolyOne Corporation (NYSE: POL), a premier provider of specialized polymer materials, services and solutions, announced its portfolio of value-added solutions that help customers meet new U.S. standards for toys and products marketed for use by children. PolyOne has a number of products that comply with the Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), a U.S. law expected to take effect on February 10, 2009. In addition to prohibiting the use of some phthalates in toys and other products for children, CPSIA will also mandate the creation of further studies and product safety rules regarding phthalates.

PolyOne has developed solutions across its product portfolio that will help toys and other child-related products conform to this legislation. These materials are each certified as a PolyOne Sustainable Solution, meeting criteria for regulatory compliance and eco-conscious composition while maintaining traditional properties and performance. The following phthalate-alternative products meet the expected requirements of CPSIA, including:

  • OnColor™ non-phthalate masterbatches for vinyl
  • Geon™ non-phthalate flexible vinyl compounds
  • Geon™ non-phthalate vinyl plastisols
  • Wilflex™ Oasis™ water-based inks
  • Wilflex™ Epic Series non-phthalate inks
  • Wilflex™ QuantumOne non-phthalate, non-PVC inks
  • PolyOne alternative plasticizers
  • PolyOne engineered thermoplastics and rigid vinyl compounds

The Act will also ban the use of lead in any children’s product. PolyOne’s numerous RoHS-compliant materials conform to this portion of the legislation.

PolyOne’s extensive technical expertise in formulating specialty compounds can be an invaluable resource for companies trying to determine how to comply with the new law. Having tested and recognized the value of incorporating alternative plasticizers (including non-phthalate options) into its products for years, PolyOne can custom-formulate products where the need for this value-added approach exists.

Like all PolyOne solutions, the phthalate-alternative products that comply with CPSIA also conform to the Company’s No Surprises PledgeSM. This is PolyOne’s commitment to delivering safe, environmentally sound solutions and its promise that the materials contain only ingredients that conform to accepted legal and regulatory guidelines.
