BMW’s New Magnesium Composite 3 Litre Motor is Lighter and More Powerful

BMW have developed a lighter, more efficient replacement for their in line 3 litre 6 cylinder motor currently used in the 3, 5, 7, X3, X5 and Z4 ranges.

The new engine benefits from a magnesium composite crank case which reduced its weight by 22 pounds to 355 pounds.

The new motor also ups the ante with a 12% increase in performance producing 258hp. However, it is also 12% more economical than its predecessor. The increase in economy has been due to improvements in the BMW’s Valvetronic engine management system as well as other innovations such as a more efficient water pump, which uses less power and allows the engine to reach optimal running temperatures more quickly.

The BMW 630 will be the first model to utilise the new generation magnesium alloy 6 cylinder engine.
