BASF is adding flame-retardant formulations to its Lurapret® range for textile coatings. The formulations are developed individually together with the customer and tailored to the customer’s requirements. They are particularly suitable for industrial and home textiles. The range of applications extends from curtains, roller blinds and mattress ticking to furnishing fabrics for the theater, upholstery for streetcars and black-out curtains for hotels. Flame-retardant Lurapret® coatings can slow down or even prevent the spread of a fire, so helping to protect people from burns and limit the economic damage of fires.
BASF develops flame-retardant formulations in close cooperation with the German chemical company Schill + Seilacher, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of flame retardants. “In Schill + Seilacher we have gained a partner whose product range and know-how optimally complement our own”, comments Dr. Werner Bertleff, Manager of Innovation Group Textiles at BASF. “So customers benefit from the combined knowledge of two market leaders,” adds Jürgen Weiße, responsible for Schill + Seilacher’s textile and manmade fibers business. In addition to Schill + Seilacher’s expertise in flame retardants, formulation development and test methods, BASF brings to the partnership its extensive experience with binders based on polymer chemistry, especially polyacrylate and polyurethane dispersions.
BASF’s flame-retardant textile coatings are individual ready-to-use solutions of a very high-quality, technically advanced standard. Their use helps customers reduce development times and increase production efficiency. All over the world, customers are provided with on-site advice and support, especially in meeting national and international flame-retardant standards.
“Flame retardancy is a really hot topic, especially in relation to textiles used in public places, for example furnishing fabrics in discotheques,” explains BASF’s Werner Bertleff. The regulations are constantly getting tougher – not least because of accidents. “This is another reason why we see good opportunities for expanding our business with flame-retardant textile coatings.”
BASF’s Lurapret® range is water-based and protects textiles from the effects of, for example, weather and mechanical stress. Decorative designs such as wash-out effects can also be obtained. Lurapret® textile coatings are well complemented by BASF products for pretreatment, finishing and processing.
