Shell and Bayer Finalise Licence Agreement to Produce High Performance Polyether Polyols

Bayer Antwerp N.V. and Shell International Research Maatschappij BV have entered a license agreement under undisclosed terms enabling Shell to implement Double Metal Cyanide (DMC) technology to produce polyether polyols using Shell´s process design under Bayer's existing Impact patents. The Impact technology specifies a process to use Double Metal Cyanide as catalyst for the polyoxyalkylation. The license agreement specifically includes a continuous process to produce long chain polyether polyols, which are used as the base products for flexible polyurethane slabstock foams. Both Shell Chemicals and Bayer are global producers of polyether polyols with Bayer MaterialScience already successfully supplying DMC catalysed polyols around the world. DMC catalysed polyol technology increases the range of options available to Shell to further strengthen its polyol business in the future.
