BASF Polystyrene Shopping Spree

As BASF celebrates the 75th anniversary of the plastic polystyrene, which was manufactured on an industrial scale for the first time and patented by BASF researchers in 1930, the polystyrene experts have devised an Internet game that not only provides information about the use of polystyrene in our daily lives but also serves a good cause: the total points scored in the game determine the amount that BASF will donate to SOS Children’s Villages.

“Not everyone knows how many of the things we use every day are made of polystyrene,” explains Hans-Dieter Schwaben, product manager for polystyrene at BASF. “You can find out simply by playing a game and at the same time, you will be prompting BASF to make a donation.”

The keyboard cursor of a computer moves a little guy wearing a “75 PS” sweatshirt through the supermarket aisles as he fills his shopping cart with all kinds of products. The player is only awarded points for articles that are made of polystyrene; the points scored vary depending on how familiar a given polystyrene application is. For every 100 points, BASF will transfer 5 euros into an account of SOS Children’s Villages.
