Novelis Develops Advanced High-Strength Aluminum Alloys for Automotive Sector

World’s leading aluminum rolling and recycling company, Novelis has developed unique high-strength alloys - Novelis Advanz™ 7000-series. These alloys are mainly meant for use in safety-critical parts of vehicle structures.

The key features are that they exhibit two to three times higher strength than currently available automotive aluminum, and are capable of reducing considerable amount of weight compared to existing high strength steels, thereby enabling automotive manufacturers to lighten vehicle weight further and at the same time ensure better passenger safety.

Automotive B-pillar made with Novelis Advanz 7000-series aluminum alloy.

"As more automakers look to reduce vehicle weight and improve fuel economy, high-strength aluminum alloys are playing an increasingly critical role in vehicle design," said Jack Clark, Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer for Novelis. "For decades, Novelis has been a pioneer in aluminum alloy development and set the standard in the automotive industry. Novelis' Advanz 7000-series will drive the industry forward by offering automakers additional weight savings with superior strength for optimal safety performance."

Vehicle parts such as crash ring components, bumper systems and door intrusion beams can be manufactured using the Novelis Advanz 7000-series alloys.

With the addition of the new Novelis Advanz 7000-series, the Novelis family of aluminum alloys has grown further, providing automotive manufacturers an innovative range of products to suit their specific requirements for formability strength and styling. At the moment, the first set of Novelis Advanz 7000-series alloys is being tested by several global automakers.

"The development of Novelis Advanz 7000-series high-strength alloys is the latest step in our strategy to expand our automotive offerings around the world," said Todd Summe, Vice President, Global Research and Development for Novelis. "Our Novelis Advanz 7000-series alloys will be used to produce automotive sheet at Novelis facilities on all three of the world's major automobile producing regions – Asia, Europe and North America – offering a unique supply chain advantage to our global customers."

Novelis is the leading supplier of aluminum sheets in the world, and partners with several of the world's top automotive manufacturers and their structurally advanced vehicles, such as the new Range Rover, the Jaguar XE and the Ford F-150.

Aluminum alloys -- including 6111, 6016 and 5754 were pioneered by Novelis. These alloys have played a pivotal role in the high volume usage of aluminum in the automotive sector.
