During the SEMICON West engagement, the NY-PEMC will also be highlighted by SUNY Poly, which, along with General Electric, is leading the strategic development and growth of the consortium to enable the high volume manufacturing and packaging of power electronic devices and systems that are smaller, faster, and more efficient. More specifically, a presentation by SUNY Poly Vice President for Manufacturing Innovation and General Manager of the NY-PEMC Paul Farrar will detail the status of the initiative and its progress to date, including information about the world-class Silicon Carbide (SiC) wafer fab which is located at SUNY Poly’s $24 billion Albany NanoTech Complex and a state-of-the-art SiC packaging facility at SUNY Poly’s Computer Chip Commercialization Center (Quad-C) fab, located in Utica, New York. Farrar will also share findings on SiC-based devices and applications for the advanced technology. Presenters from partner corporations will update attendees on capabilities related to wafer capacity per year, in addition to new metrology and analytical methods. The NY-PEMC will also showcase a number of cutting-edge power electronics-focused items at SUNY Poly’s SEMICON West Tech Pavilion exhibition booth, many of which are being supplied by GE, including a sample packaged SiC module, a 4” SiC metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) wafer, and a 6” Si demonstration wafer with MOSFET patterning, among others.

“SUNY Poly is excited to play a pivotal role in New York State’s fast growing high-tech economy, and we are eager to share progress by the critical New York Power Electronics Manufacturing Consortium as it provides an innovative path forward for more efficient and robust semiconductor solutions based on a unique public-private partnership model that has much to offer those who are attending SEMICON West 2016,” said Farrar. “In partnership with General Electric, SUNY Poly and the NY-PEMC are thrilled to be able to provide displays of power electronics components at SUNY Poly’s SEMICON West exhibition booth that not only reveal tangible technological progress, but also reflect New York State’s unmatched model for innovation-based growth as it sparks numerous business opportunities for the growing power electronics industry and its supply chain.”

Complementing the various presentations by SUNY Poly researchers and partners, the more than 26,000 expected attendees of the SEMICON West conference and exhibition will be able to learn about the institution’s world-class resources and exciting partnership opportunities by visiting SUNY Poly’s 800 square foot Tech Pavilion, which will feature representatives from SUNY Poly, Empire State Development, NY Loves Nanotech, AIM Photonics, and NY-PEMC who will provide information regarding New York State’s rapidly expanding high-tech corridor and its business incentives, such as the tax-free Start-Up NY initiative. Visitors to the SUNY Poly booth at SEMICON West will not only be able to gain insight into the NY-PEMC and view a number of Silicon Carbide-centered display items, but they will also be able to learn more about AIM Photonics and view a cutting-edge 300mm silicon photonics wafer. In addition, attendees will be able to obtain information about SUNY Poly’s workforce development efforts focused on subsystems and site services for PV, mixed signal sensors, and LED advanced manufacturing, for example. Booth number 6378 will be located in the Moscone Center’s North Hall near the TechXPOT North Advance Packaging Forum, and representatives will be available Tuesday, July 12 through Wednesday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Thursday, July 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Additionally, SUNY Poly will play an integral role in the Intersolar North America conference, which is being held in San Francisco alongside SEMICON West 2016. A panel discussion, “How the Convergence of Energy, Data Analytics, and IoT will Change the Solar Market,” will take place on Monday, July 11 led by moderator Dr. Pradeep Haldar, SUNY Poly Vice President of Entrepreneurship Innovation and Clean Energy Programs; Director of the SUNY Poly Energy and Environmental Technology Applications Center (E2TAC); Executive Director of New Energy New York (NENY); and Chief Operating and Technology Officer of the U.S. Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium (U.S. PVMC). Panelists include representatives from Gehrlicher Solar, REC Solar, IBM, Nest, and the Department of Energy’s SunShot Initiative who will discuss how the solar industry can utilize an advanced digital strategy to improve solar system costs and efficiency while looking to seamlessly integrate solar technologies into the evolving IoT.

Continuing to support New York State’s critical NY-SUN initiative, SUNY Poly and the U.S. PVMC are eager to promote dialogue between solar industry leaders, public partners such as the Department of Energy, and other stakeholders as we seek to provide an invaluable forum for shaping the direction of the solar industry’s approach to maximizing solar energy’s powerful potential. New York State is not only an innovation hub for solar energy-based R&D and deployment, it is also a place where its burgeoning high-tech ecosystem can provide unique synergies to ensure that next-generation solar technologies become even more consumer friendly. By being able to combine complementary technologies and by implementing components that will enable solar energy to embed itself into the internet of things, we are thrilled that SUNY Poly, the U.S. PVMC and its partners, with support from the U.S. Department of Energy’s SunShot Initiative, are taking a leadership role in spurring a clean energy future.
