DuPont Marks Milestone Toward New Titanium Dioxide Plant in China

DuPont Titanium Technologies has selected Huatai Group Co., Ltd., to supply liquid chlorine and other products for its new world-class titanium dioxide plant to be built at Dongying, Shandong Province, PRC. Titanium dioxide is used to add whiteness, brightness and opacity to paper, plastics and coatings.

Under a letter of intent signed recently, Huatai will build a chlor-alkali plant adjacent to the DuPont plant site in the Dongying Economic Development Zone. In addition to chlorine, the facility will supply DuPont with caustic soda, hydrochloric acid and steam.

"We are pleased that Huatai has agreed to join with us in this project," said Rick Olson, vice president and general manager, DuPont Titanium Technologies. "By locating their plant directly adjacent to our new unit, we will realize significant savings on transportation of key raw materials."

Huatai Group is a well-known group company in China with major investments in paper manufacturing, chemicals, printing and other industries. Huatai's primary products include: newsprint paper, culture paper, chlor-alkali, hydrogen peroxide, chlorine propylene and other chemicals.

DuPont announced its plan to construct the plant last year and subsequently signed a letter of intent with Dongying municipal officials. Total investment for the project is estimated at $1 billion. When completed, this will be DuPont's largest single investment outside the United States.
