APL Awarded $2.7m Grant to Develop Lighting Technology

APL Engineered Materials, a wholly owned subsidiary of Advanced Lighting Technologies have just been awarded a US$2.7 million grant from DARPA, the Defence Research Projects Agency over the next three years.

The grant will be to fund research and development of a new arc discharge light source for its High Efficiency Distributed Lighting, or HEDLight Project. The new technology will revolve around high efficiency full spectrum quartz metal halide light sources and will be applied to the next generation of navy ships and other military applications. It will also be applicable to other commercial lighting applications.

APL who possess expertise in high energy discharge lamp applications will apply this to the inherent problem of producing a low wattage light source with high efficiency and brightness with uniform spectral output.
