Cargill Earns Highest Quality Designation for Biodiesel Fuel

Although new to biodiesel production in the United States, Cargill took measures while constructing its biodiesel facilities so that it could help ensure it meets the industry standard for quality. Cargill recently earned the distinction of Accredited Producer under the BQ-9000 voluntary quality assurance program. To date, 11 companies are BQ-9000 accredited, with another seven undergoing the process.

Cargill's Iowa Falls, Iowa, location has produced biodiesel since May. The company reports 37.5 million gallons of capacity.

"Cargill's commitment to quality production is the same for fuel manufacturing as it is for our many food and industrial businesses," said Dan Schoenfelder, superintendent of Cargill's Iowa Falls biodiesel facility. "We have been able to leverage our global processing and systems knowledge in our Iowa Falls biodiesel facility, ensuring that Cargill customers consistently receive biodiesel that meet ASTM D 6751 specifications."

BQ-9000 is a quality assurance certification program that includes procedures for fuel production, storage, handling and management aimed at ensuring fuel quality throughout production and distribution. There are two categories: Certified Marketer and Accredited Producer. Both NBB and the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association have adopted the program.

"I commend Cargill for becoming accredited under BQ-9000 in the early stages of its biodiesel production," said Joe Jobe, CEO of the National Biodiesel Board (NBB). "The company realizes that the sustainability of this industry depends upon getting biodiesel quality right. Cargill's leadership will help to promote high quality fuel as the biodiesel market continues its rapid growth. I congratulate Cargill for achieving this mark of quality in its operations."

Cargill is an international provider of food, agricultural and risk management products and services, with 149,000 employees in 63 countries. Cargill's grain and oilseeds facility in Iowa Falls also produces soybean meal and soybean oil.

Biodiesel is a cleaner burning fuel that can be made from domestic renewable resources such as soybean oil. The alternative fuel can be used in any diesel engine with few or no modifications, in pure form or blended with petroleum diesel at any level. Biodiesel significantly reduces emissions while offering similar performance to diesel.

Today, it is the fastest growing alternative fuel in America. The industry sold 75 million gallons in 2005, tripling in growth from the previous year. The industry is on track to produce at least 150 million gallons this year.
