HYUNDAI STEEL Company has awarded Uhde a contract to build a new coke plant consisting of four coke oven batteries and a large single-train gas treatment unit. The coke plant, the annual production capacity of which will be 3.2 million metric tons of coke, is part of a new integrated steel mill complex being constructed by HYUNDAI STEEL at Dangjin (Chungnam Province), around 100 km south-west of South Korea's capital, Seoul.
The contract will be implemented by a consortium consisting of Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. of South Korea and Uhde GmbH of Dortmund, Germany. Uhde's scope of supplies and services comprises the complete basic engineering, the procurement of special equipment and the supervision of erection and commissioning. The Korean partner will perform the detail engineering and procure all local supplies. The total order value amounts to about € 250 million, Uhde's share being some € 150 million.
The four coke oven batteries planned will together produce around 8,700 metric tons of coke per day from approximately 11,600 metric tons of coal and will each comprise 60 large-capacity coke ovens with a chamber height of 7.6 metres. At the same time, one of the world's largest gas treatment units (190,000 m3/hour throughput) will be installed at the same location.
The new coke plant will feature all the characteristics offered by Uhde's state-of-the-art technology. This includes the use of large-capacity coke ovens with reduced space requirements, lower operating costs and considerably lower environmental pollution. Especially by using Uhde's proprietary PROven® system, the usual emission of pollutants from the oven closures and during the oven charging procedure is avoided.
This technology is already being used in the Schwelgern coke plant which supplies coke for the blast furnaces of ThyssenKrupp Steel AG at Duisburg. Uhde participated to a large extent in the realisation of the coke plant by an engineering contract.
The modern CSQ (Coke Stabilisation Quenching) process with an integrated two-stage particle separator will be used for coke cooling. Apart from very good emission values, which are comparable to those obtained in dry coke cooling processes, the CSQ process is characterised by producing cooled coke with an extremely high degree of stability. This is highly important for today's high-capacity blast furnaces.
The gas treatment unit will also use the latest technology. A combination of Uhde's proprietary CYCLASULF® and the MONOCLAUS® processes makes for optimum desulphurisation of the coke oven gas and the recovery of high-purity sulphur. All the components of the gas treatment unit will be operated in closed systems resulting in zero emission.
The COKEMASTER® system developed by Uhde for automating all units of the battery and gas treatment section guarantees reliable and process- and cost-optimised operation.
The first coke oven battery and the gas treatment unit are scheduled to go on stream in late 2009, and will be followed by the commissioning of the other three coke oven batteries by late 2010.
