Indentation University Session 16: How to Test Tires and Rubber Compounds

Session 16 of the KLA Instruments Indentation University series expands upon the previous session, detailing the theory of the mechanical behavior of polymers with a hands-on demonstration on rubber.

About this Webinar

Session 16 covers the use of the ProbeDMA option to perform dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), on sections of rubber tire. Sample preparation is also covered in detail.

Note: for Session 16, it is recommended to view the following Indentation University webinars as background for the discussion:

Attend this Indentation University webinar to:

  • Learn about sample preparation techniques for rubber compounds
  • Understand how to mount tire cross-sections
  • Learn about techniques for sample polishing
  • Become familiar with ProbeDMA local Dynamic Mechanical Analysis

About the Speaker

Dr. Kurt Johanns, Applications Scientist, KLA Instruments

Dr. Kurt Johanns is an Applications Scientist for KLA Instruments, specializing in nanoindentation.

Kurt received his Ph.D. in Materials Sciences and Engineering from the University of Tennessee under Professor George Pharr and conducted post-doctoral research at TU Darmstadt.

He joined Nanomechanics, Inc. in 2015, which was then acquired by KLA in 2018. Kurt spends his time working with customers and the engineering team, developing new test techniques and capabilities. His area of interest is fracture and failure of materials at small scales.
