Indentation University Session 21: Scratch Testing DLC on Silicon

Session 21 of the KLA Instruments Indentation University covers the measurement of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings on silicon (Si) using the Scratch and Wear Test Method with the Nano Indenter® G200X.

About this Webinar

Session 21 first reviews general nanoindentation measurement and diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings, then demonstrates sample preparation techniques.

A general introduction to scratch testing is provided, followed by a live demo of the Scratch and Wear Test Method, using DLC coatings as the sample. Results are analyzed, and the effect of changing the scratch velocity parameter is addressed using the Student’s T-Test statistical analysis.

About the Speaker

Jennifer Hay, Senior Applications Scientist, KLA Instruments

Jennifer Hay is formerly a Senior Applications Scientist for KLA Instruments, specializing in nanoindentation. Prior to joining KLA, she held similar positions at Nanomechanics, Keysight, Agilent, and MTS Systems Corporation.

She has worked in the nanoindentation field since 1996, advancing standardization while also developing methodology for new applications, such as thin films, polymers, gels, and biomaterials.

Jennifer served as chair of the MEMS/Nanomechanics technical division of the Society of Experimental Mechanics (SEM), and she has authored numerous journal articles on nanoindentation, including an invited feature series in the SEM journal Experimental Techniques.
