Research and Development Involving the Australian Carbon Fibre Industry

Associate Professor Bronwyn Fox from Deakin University outlines some of the successes that they have had to date with the development of composite materials technology including work with Quickstep who are about to produce parts for the Joint Strike Fighter by Lockheed Martin.

More recently Deakin University and VCAMM put together a consortium to procure a carbon fibre furnace at the newly established ACFRF, Australian Carbon Fibre Research Facility. At the ACFRF, they will conduct research that relates to industry, using the unique open access research facility.

She also discusses some of the carbon fibre composite projects that they will be working on such as:

  • Weaving and 3D preforms
  • Surface treatment for carbon fibres
  • Improvement of carbon fibre properties through the use of additives

She also talks about the success of the Australian carbon fibre industry, and how it will be dependent on government legislation.

This interview was recorded at the Carbon Fibre - Future Directions conference, held in Geelong Australia and organised by VCAMM and Deakin University.
