Using XRF as a Forensic Tool to Identify People
In real life forensics, people burned beyond recognition, who may not be able to be identified from fingerprints or DNA can be identified from dental fillings. Due to the fact most manufacturers make dental resins with differing compositions, researchers have been able to match the dental resins, back to a database and dental records and consequently identify people. The technique originally used a bulky scanning electron microscope, but now uses a portable x-ray fluorescence (XRF) device to provide results in a matter of seconds.
