Introducing the IoT Sensor Kit for Electronics

Tradeshow Talks with Dialog Semiconductor

In this interview, Erik Peters, International Product Marketing Manager from Dialog Semiconductors talks to AZoM about why they are attending electronica this year.

Please could you introduce your company and why you are exhibiting at Electronica this year?

It has already been a very successful week for us here at Electronica. Virtually all of our European customers come to this show so it is very important for us to be here. With the portfolio that Dialog has for IoT devices, smartphone peripherals, and for wearables we're right at the heart of what this show is all about.

We focus on next-generation electronics, innovations in electronics and taking these deep technologies into practical, everyday situations.

Please could you tell me about the products and solutions that you're exhibiting this year?

What industries and applications is your product range designed for?

There are many target industries that our portfolio is nicely centered around. We're known for our systems in smartphones, and the IoT. Within the IoT, we focus on connecting sensors and appliances within networks, creating smart homes, smart buildings and connected healthcare.

Automotive is also one of our key target industries. We're extending automotive qualification to certain products so that we have a comprehensive line up.

What sets you apart from your competitors?

Our SmartBond™ DA14585 IoT multi sensor kit is an application focused development kit for our customers to be able to develop their own system based on our platform. This sensor hub takes the sensor data and sends it to your smartphone or tablet, or even the cloud, and allows analytics to be run.

The Multi Sensor kit provides a number of different sensors. These include environmental sensors such as temperature, ambient light, humidity, air quality, pressure, and proximity which can be combined in different ways for different applications. For example, a customer can build a weather station with them.

DA14585 IoT Multi Sensor kit also offers motion measurements; such as compasses, gyroscopes, and accelerometers. Combining all of this data together through an on-chip sensor fusion algorithm, gives real-time physical orientation, which is sent at very high frame rates to smartphones, where it can be displayed and used in apps. Customers can depending on the product they envision choose to use just one or two sensors from this platform, and remove all of the other hardware and software that they don't need. There are also connectors to add their own selection of sensors and components.

We provide our customers the design files and the source code - both for the kit itself as well as for the smartphone app- which enables all the flexibility for developing their own Bluetooth low energy product.

So as Dialog we provide the building blocks and it’s up to our customers to determine the functionality that they need. We’ve seen our technology used for all sorts of applications, ranging from weather stations, gaming controllers to fall sensors for the elderly, where a motion sensor detects a fall and sends out a warning signal over the Bluetooth link.
