Steel exits the continuous caster as a single solid piece. To cut it to length, the torch cut-off system must first measure and clamp onto the side of the red-hot steel. Once clamped, the slab continues moving until the torches finish cutting it to the required size. The extreme heat in this process poses a major challenge for sensors on torch cut-off machines.

Solution
A reliable position-sensing device is essential to close the loop on torch cut-off heads. The Gemco 953 VMax LDT, paired with the 950MD Mill-Duty Housing and vortex air cooling, provides an effective answer.
Using existing filtered plant air, the vortex coolers can generate airflows as cold as -40 ºF, keeping both electronics and mechanical actuators protected.
For slab length monitoring, the Gemco 925 Cable Reel offers an ideal solution. Its stainless-steel aircraft-grade cable withstands the hostile environment, while the reel housing can be positioned in a more accessible, cooler area.
Benefits
- Vortex coolers and remotely mounted cable reel housings significantly extend sensor lifespan
- Longer lifespan reduces downtime, saving both time and maintenance costs
Conclusion
Gemco products are engineered to endure the extreme conditions of steel mills. With a wide range of options - such as water-cooled jackets for LDTs - these solutions are built for longevity and reliability in even the harshest environments.
