New Products: Steels for High Speed Laser Cutting

SSAB Swedish Steel has been comparing the laser cutting performance of various steels at high speeds. The general perception is that this technique needs special, expensive steels, but the results show that SSAB's Domex hot-rolled, cold forming steel has all the properties required for good quality high-speed laser cutting. These include a smooth, uniform surface to absorb, and not reflect, laser beam energy, availability with a pickled surface, consistent flatness and smooth edge surfaces, as well as the absence of macro-inclusions. Domex can be cut at higher speed than ordinary steels and was at least as good as more costly special laser steels.
