Introduction

Super alloys have ability to function at very high temperatures and severe mechanical stress, and also where high surface stability is required. They have good creep and oxidation resistance. They contain a number of elements in different combinations to achieve the desired result. There are three groups of alloys, namely cobalt-based, nickel-based, and iron-based alloys.

Inconel MA 954™ is a nickel-chromium alloy that is developed by mechanical alloying. The mechanical alloying is done by alloying elemental powder of the alloy constituents in an inert atmosphere. The following datasheet will discuss about Inconel MA 954™.

Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of Inconel MA 954™ is outlined in the following table.

Element Content (%)
Chromium, Cr 19-23

Fabrication and Heat Treatment

Machinability

Inconel MA 954™ can be machined using conventional machining methods which are used for iron-based alloys. Machining operations are performed using commercial coolants. High-speed operations such as grinding, milling, or turning, are performed using water-based coolants.

Forming

Inconel MA 954™ can be formed using all conventional techniques.

Welding

Inconel MA 954™ is welded using shielded metal-arc welding, gas-tungsten arc welding, gas metal-arc welding, and submerged-arc welding methods.

Heat Treatment

Inconel MA 954™ is heat treated at 1149°C (2100°F).

Cold Working

Inconel MA 954™ can be cold worked using standard tooling.

Annealing

Inconel MA 954™ is annealed at 1149°C (2100°F).

Hardening

Inconel MA 954™ can be hardened by adding yttrium oxide. It does not respond to heat treatment.

Applications

Inconel MA 954™ is used in hot sections of gas turbines.
