Aerospace Specialty Coatings Company, Deft, to Be Acquired by PPG

PPG Industries today announced that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire certain assets of Deft Incorporated, a privately-owned specialty coatings company based in Irvine, Calif. Deft’s primary business is supplying structural primers and military topcoats to the North American aviation industry, and it has smaller architectural and industrial coatings businesses.

Polycrystalline Diamond Enables Manufacture of Optomechanical Circuits

The application of light for information processing opens up a multitude of possibilities. However, to be able to adequately use photons in circuits and sensors, materials need to have particular optical and mechanical properties. Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have now for the first time used polycrystalline diamond to manufacture optical circuits and have published their results online in Nature Communications (DOI: 10.1038/ncomms2710).

Electrically Conductive, Polyurethane-Based Adhesive Demonstrates Flexibility and Room Temperature Cure

Adhesives specialists Intertronics are delighted to announce availability of Polytec PU 1000, an electrically conductive polyurethane which addresses applications in die attach, bonding of components in hybrid circuit applications and surface mount technology (SMT); areas where silver filled electrically conductive adhesives have been used for many decades. Novel Thermoelectric Device Achieves Free Cooling Using Energy from Heat to be Dissipated

Researchers at the UPNA/NUP-Public University of Navarre have produced a prototype of a self-cooling thermoelectric device that achieves “free” cooling of over 30ºC in devices that give off heat. It is a piece of equipment that acts as a traditional cooler but which consumes no electricity because it obtains the energy it needs to function from the very heat that has to be dissipated.
