BASF today launched a new red shade yellow pigment, Paliotol® Yellow K 1750, at CAD RETEC 2013, the largest technical conference hosted in North America that is specifically dedicated to the color and appearance of plastics. With the help of a new chemistry patented by BASF, this organic pigment offers customers a cost effective alternative to heavy metal and diarylide pigments that can be restricted for use in certain applications.
By the end of 2014, BASF will have built a new European center of expertise for its flooring and waterproofing systems at the BASF Coatings GmbH site in Oldenburg, Germany. The company is investing in the production and development of polyurethane and epoxy-based systems for flooring and waterproofing, together with logistics, research, sales and service.
Huntsman Corporation held an inauguration ceremony on 17 September to mark the official opening of its new Asia Pacific Technology Center (ATC) in Shanghai’s Minhang Economic & Technological Development Zone.
The University of Houston has received $4 million from the Welch Foundation to establish the Center of Excellence in Polymer Chemistry.
Traditionally, the training of bomb-sniffing dogs has been a hazardous job, but newly developed odor-releasing materials could take the risk out of that work. Scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are seeking to patent a novel system that can capture scents and release them over time.
A research group led by Dr. Yoshitaka Tateyama from the NIMS International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (MANA), in collaboration with Fujifilm Corporation, succeeded in elucidating, on the atomic level, reaction mechanisms of the reductive decomposition and binding of electrolytes toward formation of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the interface between electrolyte and electrode, by using the K computer, the current flagship supercomputer in Japan. The findings will play a key role in improving the performance and safety of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).
MIT researchers have found a new family of materials that provides the best-ever performance in a reaction called oxygen evolution, a key requirement for energy storage and delivery systems such as advanced fuel cells and lithium-air batteries.
In synthetic chemistry, making the best possible use of the needed ingredients is key to optimizing high-quality production at the lowest possible cost.
In future, it will be much easier to produce some active pharmaceutical substances and chemical compounds than was the case to date. An international team working with chemists from the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim an der Ruhr have immobilised various catalysts on nylon in a very simple way. Catalysts mediate between the reagents in a chemical reaction and control the process leading to the desired end product.
Praxair, Inc. today announced the start-up of its state-of-the-art 135 million standard cubic feet per day (scfd) hydrogen plant serving Valero’s St. Charles refinery in Norco, Louisiana, under a long-term supply agreement.
