Strem Chemicals Receive Excellence Tier Ranking from SOCMA ChemStewards

Strem Chemicals, Inc. announced today that as a result of exceeding key performance requirements for the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates’ (SOCMA) ChemStewards® program, it has qualified for the program’s highest ranking, known as the Excellence Tier.

Strem Chemicals is recognized for its successful efforts to go above and beyond the minimum for federal environmental, health, safety and security (EHS&S) compliance, build customer confidence and community trust, and strengthen product stewardship.

ChemStewards® is an industry-developed EHS&S program designed for the batch, custom and specialty chemical industry. It was created from industry’s commitment to continuous improvement and to reduce the environmental footprint left by member facilities. The program is based on a three-tier system with key performance requirements per tier. Tier one is known as Fundamental, and tier two is Enhanced Performance – the standard tier for ChemStewards® participants. To qualify for Excellence, or tier three, facilities must sign core principles, complete security requirements, meet specific metrics obligations and requirements, have one documented management review meeting, and complete a third-party verification of management systems at the Enhanced Performance level.

Strem Chemicals was also one of just two companies (the other being Optima Chemical Group LLC) receiving SOCMA’s Gold Performance Improvement Award for outstanding commitment to continuous improvement of its EHS&S practices. Criteria for determination of award winners included stakeholder communications, product stewardship, incorporation of EHS&S consideration in planning and operations activities, employee training and engagement, and resource management and waste minimization. The Gold Performance Improvement Award is SOCMA’s top recognition for companies that take into account practices and principles that demonstrate continuous improvement above and beyond the requirements of the ChemStewards® program.

"Qualification for the Excellence Tier and receipt, for the second year in a row, of SOCMA’s Gold Improvement Award reflects the commitment that all of our employees have to continuously improving our products and EHS&S performance,” said Strem’s Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist R.J. Wolcik.

“We congratulate Strem Chemicals for this achievement,” said Lawrence D. Sloan, SOCMA’s President and CEO. “Strem Chemicals’ customers, workers and community should take comfort in the fact that their supplier, employer or neighbor is operating above expectations in conformance with regulatory requirements.”

Strem Chemicals was recognized for its qualification for the Excellence Tier and presented the Gold Performance Improvement Award at SOCMA's 92nd Annual Dinner on December 9, 2013, in New York City.
