Laser Welding Visualization with CAVILUX Laser and Phantom VEO 710s

Everyday, researchers from universities all over our beautiful planet are busy conducting studies and making new discoveries that can impact our lives in the future.

One the most useful tools to visualize, study, and understand different phenomena is a high speed camera capable of capturing up to millions of frames per second. This number of frames means that nothing will go unnoticed and the process or phenomena can be fully observed and analyzed.

However, when the process produces a bright light, it is very difficult to observe the target area will not be easily visible, and this is where our CAVILUX laser illumination comes into play. Using very short pulses we are able to illuminate the process and filter out any other unwanted source of light.

In this example Politechnika Slaska used our CAVILUX Smart laser illumination for laser welding application. The process of laser alloying aluminum alloy with magnesium AlMg5 with nickel powder. The purpose of the observation was to analyze the formation of the liquid tongue and the layer during the process.

The heat source was a fiber laser with a maximum power of 4kW and a wavelength of 1070 nm with spot diameter of 3 mm.

The scanning speed of the laser beam was 0.2 m/min and in order to protect the liquid pool from the impact of air, Ar shielding gas was used with a flow rate of 4 l/min.

Camera used was a Vision Research Phantom VEO 710S, recording speed 3200 FPS.
