Air Products Mobile Hydrogen Fueler Technology Makes Debut in Hydrogen Tour 08

Air Products’ mobile hydrogen fueler technology is based at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey for two days with good reason.

It is fueling the hydrogen powered fuel cell vehicles of multiple automakers venturing into New York City and for an event at the Liberty Science Center tomorrow as part of the national Hydrogen Tour ’08, which is designed to demonstrate that hydrogen vehicle and fueling technologies are approaching commercial availability. The nationwide tour, which will be supported along the way by multiple Air Products’ hydrogen fueling technologies and established hydrogen fueling stations, will make 31 stops in 18 states, stretching from Maine to California.

“Air Products supports the ideals of the Hydrogen Tour ’08. We have been involved with so many demonstration projects in the U.S. and around the world. We have worked closely with all the automobile manufacturers on the tour and applaud the dedication they have shown to hydrogen enabled cars. At the same time, we have been integral to the advancements in hydrogen storage, compression and fueling technology,” said Tom Mutchler, general manager – Worldwide Equipment for Air Products.

Air Products, the global leader in hydrogen fueling infrastructure and technology, has been involved with hydrogen fueling since 1993. Since that time, it has safely conducted over 66,000 fuelings of hydrogen powered vehicles at over 85 fueling stations located in 15 countries around the world. This trend-setting technology involving Air Products’ know-how, equipment, and hydrogen continues to be increasingly used at a pace of approximately 2,000 hydrogen fills per month.

Along the Hydrogen Tour ’08 route to date, Air Products has fueled the vehicles of Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai-Kia, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen. The overall tour participants include nine auto manufacturers, the U.S. Department of Energy, California Fuel Cell Partnership, National Hydrogen Association, and U.S. Department of Transportation, as well as hydrogen gas providers. More information on the tour can be found at the U.S. Department of Transportation web site at http://www.dot.gov/affairs/dot11108.htm.

A scheduled tour stop later in the day tomorrow is at Air Products’ headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where the company will fuel multiple vehicles with its new hydrogen fueling station. Vehicles from Daimler, Honda, Hyundai-Kia, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagon and BMW are to attend the Pennsylvania event, which will also include ride and drive opportunities for media and other attendees.

“The technology and varied applications for the use of hydrogen continue to develop and grow,” said Mutchler. “It has been exciting to be part of this forward-moving market. At the same time, we have participated in diverse hydrogen energy projects with start-up companies, universities, and public sector agencies. We are currently working with several entities to advance generation of hydrogen from renewable sources. Hydrogen will benefit the environment for use in numerous applications and we are particularly excited about off-road vehicle activity. Hydrogen when delivered in typical fueling station quantities is cost competitive with gasoline.”

Air Products, the leading supplier of merchant hydrogen to the refinery industry to assist in the making of cleaner burning transportation fuels, has placed a majority of its hydrogen fueling station technology in 17 states within the United States. On a global basis, Air Products’ has hydrogen fueling technology in Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.
