Introduction

Alloy R405 is a nickel-copper alloy with excellent corrosion resistance in an extensive range of marine and chemical environments. It has good mechanical properties from subzero temperatures up to about 480°C. The alloy is slightly magnetic at room temperature. It has excellent resistance to chloride ion stress corrosion cracking.

Fabrication and Heat Treatment

Machinability

Nickel alloy R405 can be machined using high-speed tool steel.

Welding

Nickel alloy R405 can be welded using standard welding methods.

Heat Treatment

The alloy may be annealed, but it does not respond to heat treatment.

Forging

The alloy cannot be forged due to high sulfur content.

Cold Working

The alloy can be readily cold worked, especially in screw machine operations.

Annealing

Annealing of nickel alloy R405 can be performed at 927°C (1700°F) and air cooled.
