Introduction

WHA alloys are known as Densalloys commercially. These alloys are classified into four classes and each class is further divided into magnetic and non-magnetic alloys based on their magnetic permeability. Those alloys having magnetic permeability greater than 1.05 are considered magnetic. Class 4 Densalloy consists of magnetic alloys alone.

DENS25 is a WHA alloy belonging to Class 3 having a magnetic permeability of 1.01-1.02. Since the magnetic permeability of this alloy is less than 1.05, it is classified as non-magnetic densalloy. Densalloys exhibit better ductility and machinability than pure tungsten. The composition of tungsten in this alloy is 95%, rest of it is composed nickel and copper. The standard forms in which the alloy is available are pressed and sintered billet, sintered near net shape, sheet and plate.

This datasheet will look into the chemical composition, properties and applications of Densalloy-DENS25.

Fabrication

Machinability

DENS25 alloy is easily machinable into complex shapes using common metal cutting and shaping tools. A suitable coolant should be used while machining this alloy.

Welding

These alloys cannot be welded due to the vast difference in the welding and binder phase.

Cold Working

This alloy can be cold worked by the process of swaging.

Applications

Densalloy DENS25 is used in the following applications:

  • Radiation shielding
  • Aircraft counter balances
  • Racing weights
  • Boring bars
  • Ordnance applications
  • Well lodging.
