HZB Team Measures How New Bonds Influence Molecules for First Time

A team from Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin has been able for the first time to measure how new bonds influence molecules: they have reconstructed the “energy landscape” of acetone molecules using measurement data from the Swiss Light Source (SLS) of the Paul Scherrer Institut, and thereby empirically established the formation of hydrogen bonds between acetone and chloroform molecules. The results have been published in Nature Scientific Reports and assist in understanding fundamental phenomena of chemistry.

Panasonic’s High Dielectric Constant Encapsulation Material for Finger-Print Sensor Packages

Panasonic Corporation today announced that it has commercialized an encapsulation molding compound having a high dielectric constant (Dk) that is suitable for finger-print sensor packages to be incorporated in mobile devices, and will start full-scale mass production of the product in April 2016. This material helps improve the performance as well as reduce the size and thickness of packages for finger-print sensors.

Research on New Cladding and Fuel Materials for Safer Nuclear Reactors

Around the world nuclear energy is a vital source of energy. It is needed because it is a clean energy source and reduces the carbon emissions from fossil fuels. However many people believe that the risk of nuclear accidents does not outweigh the advantages of using nuclear energy. Michael Tonks, assistant professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering at Penn State and director of the Microstructure Science and Engineering Laboratory at Penn State is involved with three projects through the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP). These projects aim to discover new materials for nuclear fuel, to make the existing light water reactors (LWRs) safer.

First Experimental Observation of Isostructural Solid-Solid Transition at Single-Particle Level

A solid’s surface usually melts into a thin liquid layer prior to the melting point. This phenomenon of surface melting occurs in all categories of solids: for example, two ice cubes can fuse at a temperature less than 0°C as the premelted surface water is surrounded inside the bulk at the point of contact and is frozen. Premelting promotes crystal growth, and is vital in geology, metallurgy, and meteorology, such as frost heave, snowflake growth, glacier movement, and skating. As there is a lack of microscopic measurements, the causes of several premelting scenarios and the impact of dimensionality on the premelting phenomenon are poorly understood.
