Sandwich System of Transition Metal Oxides Helps Control Properties of Interfaces

A Franco-German cooperation has investigated a sandwich system of transition metal oxides at BESSY II. The scientists discovered a new option to control properties of the interface between the two layers, for instance the amount of charge transferred from one layer to the other or the emergence of ferromagnetism. Their insights might help to create new properties at the interface, not present in the primary materials, maybe even novel forms of High Tc superconductivity.

These aerogels are water repellent, ultralight, non-toxic, flexible, and very strong, making them suitable for applications like packaging, heat insulation, and oil spill cleaning.

A new underwater adhesive substance has been developed by UC Santa Barbara’s interdisciplinary group of researchers. This adhesive can be used for a variety of non-biological and biomedical applications. Areas that could benefit from this glue, include dental adhesion, tissue repair and other surface adhesion applications which are usually done under adverse conditions like in aqueous solutions with organic impurities and salty sea water.
