The Siemens Industry Solutions Division has received an order from Saica Containerboard UK Ltd., to supply a Reject Power plant for thermal recycling of residues from its new production line in Manchester, Great Britain.
The Sipaper Reject Power process will be used to take over the rejects produced during the papermaking process and pass them on in a controlled way for thermal energy recovery. This will reduce not only waste disposal costs, but also fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The project is scheduled to be completed in July 2012.

Saica is an international company which manufactures packaging paper from waste paper. It is constructing a new production line in Manchester, Great Britain, which will have an annual capacity of 425,000 tons of corrugated board raw paper. Siemens is building a Reject Power plant which will dispose of the waste materials from production in a cost-effective way that is also kind on the environment. It consists of a combustion chamber, a waste heat boiler, a flue gas cleaning unit and a stack. The scope of supply also includes the fuel mixing and metering, the spinning wheel feeder, ash collection and storage systems as well as the instrumentation, the emission monitoring system and the plant control system. Siemens is also responsible for engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the plant.
The Reject Power plant is designed to an effective thermal input of 22 megawatts. It will generate some 30 tons of steam per hour at a temperature of about 175 degrees Celsius and a pressure of 6.5 bar. This will be fed back into the production line and used in the papermaking process. The new plant will not only burn some 80,000 tons of residues in an environmentally friendly way, but also reduce the amount of fossil fuel required to generate steam. This will save about 17.6 million cubic meters of natural gas a year. The cost of disposing of waste materials will also fall considerably.
The Reject Power process for thermal energy recovery of paper making residues and other fuel like biomass with a water content of up to 50 percent and low heat values is part of the Siemens environmental portfolio which generated sales of some 23 billion euros for the company in fiscal 2009, making Siemens the world's largest supplier of environmentally sustainable technology. In the same period, customers saved no less than 210 million tons of carbon dioxide by using the company's products and solutions. This is equivalent to the annual combined CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.
