Kopin Use Nanotechnology for Solid-State Lighting Breakthrough

Kopin Corp have successfully used nanotechnolgy to produce ultra efficient blue light emitting diodes (LED’s) smaller then a grain of sand.

The technology used to produce these devices is patent pending and called NanoPockets , and is responsible for other improvements.

These new LED’s, called CyberLite are as bright as currently available commercially varieties, but run on only 2.9 volts, compared to the normal 3.3 volts. The developers also believe that with further development, these devices will be suitable for general lighting duties.

By combining blue LED’s with a yellow phosphor, it is possible to create a white LED. These are suited to portable electronic devices that require low rates battery consumption such as mobile phones, PDA’s etc.

The next major challenge is scaling up production of CyberLites to commercial levels. The market outlook for these devices is very promising with market research indicating that the market will be worth in excess of $3 billion by 2005
